Mugnier is part of Burgundy's elite. There's no shortage of stunners in the line-up. In the past handful of vintages, I've developed a real fondness for Clos de la Maréchale. This is the value in Mugnier's stable, and one of the best buys for the money in Burgundy.
Mugnier produced gorgeous 2013s.The Maréchale highlights this. There's a soil and mineral inflected purity that's heartbreaking. For all of the vibrancy and snap, Maréchale makes itself felt in its punch and long detailed finish.
Mugnier's Maréchale is a fascinating expression of Nuits-Saint-George. The village is known for its muscle, its characterful rustic edge. Mugnier renders it with an incredible amount of refinement without sacrificing terroir or character.
For me, Maréchale dramatizes what a sensitive and skillful winemaker Mugnier is. It's a bottle that overdelivers in such a beautifully compelling way.
