Burgundy Game-Changer:
2019 Berthaut-Gerbet Fixin

Posted by Ian McFadden

Back in the 19th century, Fixin was thought to rival the quality of Gevrey.

Today, Gevrey rolls off the tongues of Burgundy novices with ease, while it takes some time exploring Burgundy's back roads to discover the village of Fixin.

Wines, like Joliet's Fixin Clos de la Perrière and Gelin's Fixin Clos Napoléon, quietly cruised around for many years with a cult following among those in the know. With the arrival of Amélie Berthaut, though, Fixin has received a dose of energy that it hasn't seen in generations.

Berthaut's 2019s show a breathtaking finesse and multifaceted personality.

Her 2019 Fixin is stunning. There's a gorgeous harmony and precision to the wine. It's fascinating how the wine combines rounded power with stony minerality and high-toned red fruits and floral notes. The amount of sophistication that this village wine offers is really impressive.

In 2013, at just 25 years old, Amélie Berthaut took over the majority of her mother and father’s separate estates to form Berthaut-Gerbet. Her wines from Fixin immediately created a major stir.

It's worth pointing out that even though she has become associated with Fixin, the domaine has holdings in heavy-hitting sites, including Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Petits Monts and Echézeaux. It speaks volumes that her Fixin bottlings are a large source of her fame.

What Berthaut does with Fixin is awe-inspiring. These are pure, refined, and mineral expressions of the village with just the right amount of rusticity to stay true to the nature of Fixin.

Burghound: "The 2019 Fixin Village comes from a foudre, completely de-stemmed and was filtered two days prior to my visit as Amelie Berthaut finds the turbidity quite high. Nevertheless, it has a very elegant bouquet with a mix of well defined red fruit and crushed stone. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, quite fleshy in style but beautifully balanced with more than enough tension on the finish. Delightful."
