Burgundy Royalty - Revisited: 2017 Maison Leroy Bourgogne Blanc

Posted by Ian McFadden

The wines of Lalou Bize-Leroy respect no boundaries.

Wherever you turn, the wines leave you astonished.

Today, we turn to Maison Leroy's 2017 Bourgogne Blanc. This is a wine whose sophistication, depth, and outright pedigree stop you dead in your tracks. When it comes to Bourgogne Blanc, the only parallel that I can think of is Coche-Dury. Consistently, the Bourgogne Blanc has stood out among Maison Leroy's lineup (the negociant label) for its jaw-dropping value.

Lalou Bize-Leroy is a powerhouse. The woman behind the world's finest Burgundies (and still partial owner of DRC), she is fiercely confident in her own style and taste, and she's not going to let anyone tell her that Bourgogne denotes a merely simple wine.

Her wines, from Musigny to Bourgogne Blanc, are among the very best singular expressions of each place, of each grape. For me, Leroy's magic is, in some ways, more shockingly present in her Bourgogne Blanc than her majestic Grand Crus. To elevate an appellation like Bourgogne Blanc to this level is simply shocking. Last year, I was so impressed with the 2017 Bourgogne Blanc that I took a position on the wine. I'm happy to have another opportunity to offer the wine.

Here Leroy's deft touch is apparent, and the result is a little wild, a little exotic, and all brought together in a seamless aristocratic refinement. The 2017 white Burgundies are defined by an incredible sense of balance. Leroy's Bourgogne Blanc exploits the character of the vintage to turn out a wine of implausible harmony. It's dramatically enveloping while maintaining rigorous intensity and precision. This is the sort of magic that only the best can pull off.

The 2017 Bourgogne Blanc presents an instance where Burgundy's neat hierarchies crumble. This is a dead serious bottle of white Burgundy. I strongly encourage you to check this out and take advantage of the lowest price in the nation.
