Burgundy's Little Secret in Jero
1990 Drouhin Beaune
1er Cru Clos des Mouches Rouge Jeroboams
Drouhin's Clos des Mouches is one of those secrets of the serious Burgundy fanatics.
I'm very happy to offer Mouches in jero, back-vintage, with perfect provenance and at the lowest price around by a good margin.
Drouhin's 1990s are just beautiful. I've had the 1990 Mouches many times and have been blown away by it each and every time.
This isn't surprising. Clos des Mouches is a gem of the Drouhin line-up. There have been many nights when amidst a sea of Grand Crus on the table it was the bottle of Mouches that's empty at the end of the night. This goes a long way in explaining why you stumble upon cases of Clos des Mouches along with the most heralded bottles in collectors' cellars.
I can't help but highlight the rarity of these jeros - I doubt that I'll be able to make an offer like this again.
Drouhin's wines thrive on a beguiling delicacy, finesse, subtlety and brilliance. Their style found a close to perfect platform to express itself in 1990. It was a strong vintage all around, but Drouhin produced killer '90s and the Clos des Mouches Rouge is just gorgeous.
Clos des Mouches was one of the first sites that Joseph Drouhin bought in the 1920s. The site itself is situated in a choice mid-slope location smack against Beaune's border with Pommard.
The old vines claw into hard limestone. If Beaune is known for being somewhat sturdy and rustic, Clos des Mouches is something of an anomaly; the wine is strikingly elegant, suave and silky in texture.
In short, Clos des Mouches is a very special site and the wines have a reputation for making old bones - the Burghound has notes from recently tasting a great 1964.
I'm really excited to offer these, especially at such advantageous pricing.
