Chambolle Benchmark:
2017 Barthod Chambolle-Musigny

Posted by Ian McFadden

Long-time Burgundy fans buy Barthod every vintage, without hesitation.

The wines are in a word: bulletproof. Barthod just doesn't miss, and her Chambolles show a shimmering clarity and heartbreakingly silky elegance that makes them pretty much archetypical examples of the region.

Today, I'm happy to offer Barthod's 2017 Chambolle for $94.95.

Barthod's calling cards are purity, density, and finesse. There's an unwavering honesty to the wines. The 2017 Chambolle highlights Barthod's style beautifully. Tasting through Barthod's 2017s has been really exciting. There's a radiant clarity and lift to the wines that's gorgeous.  I was very happy to have another opportunity to buy this.

Sourced from multiple parcels throughout the village, the Chambolle always boasts a beautiful sense of completeness and aromatic complexity. The 2017 is animated by a tense mineral core with bright red fruits, spice, and gentle earthy notes.

Before closing, I should mention that quantities are very limited, and we expect a strong response. People tend to jump at the chance to buy Barthod.

Burghound: "Here too the aromas of plum, violet and blueberry are super-fresh and expressive. The sleek, intense and beguilingly delicious middle weight flavors exude a subtle minerality onto the firm and relatively serious finish. This is perhaps less elegant than it usually is as it's more structured but it may well compensate by developing even better depth over time."
