"Hudelot-Noëllat deserves greater recognition."
-Clive Coates, Côte d'Or
More and more, people are talking about Hudelot-Noëllat - just this week the wines came up four times in conversations with Burgundy collectors.
Since the arrival of Charles Van Canneyt, the wines of Hudelot-Noëllat have reached a whole new level and savvy Burgundy collectors have quickly added them to their short list. However, as Clive Coates points out, their wines remain under-the-radar. These days seem numbered, though.
For buyers, this lack of recognition is a good thing: pricing remains very fair. You can think of their 2011 Chambolle-Musigny as "exhibit A."
Deals like this on quality Chambolle are very rare. When customers try to pick my brain for deals, they always ask if I know of any values in Chambolle. Out of all of Burgundy's villages, Chambolle is the easiest to fall for. And the prices certainly reflect this. Finding a good village Chambolle under the $70 range is very difficult.
Chambolle is so loved because of the way it delivers finesse, perfume and silken elegance. There's a fine-ness to Chambolle that's really easy to get obsessed with. Simply put: it's Burgundy at its most lovely and beguiling.
Hudelot-Noëllat produces luxurious Burgundies that capture all of the sensual, heartbreaking qualities of Chambolle. They are immediately enjoyable, but not over-the-top: they are balanced and energetic with impressive focus and firm structures. The easy comparison is with Mugneret-Gibourg, only slightly riper and more hedonistic.
The 2011 vintage offers a perfect showcase for the style of Hudelot-Noëllat's Chambolle. The vintage has a lovely freshness and beautiful clarity of fruit. The 2011s have a great balance and a clear mineral streak. Hudelot-Noëllat's 2011 Chambolle delivers suave dark fruits with floral top notes and a firm core of beautiful dark, stony minerality. All of this is presented with nice freshness and detail.
There's not much else to say. This is a gorgeous Chambolle that's within reach. As is usually the case, there's not much wine. We're happy to send this to a small group of Burgundy supporters.

Burghound: "This is aromatically very pretty with an airy and cool red pinot fruit nose that introduces lacy, round and utterly delicious light weight flavors that exude a fine minerality on the ever-so-slightly edgy finish. The supporting tannins are right at the limit of full phenolic maturity."
