Chambolle Without Artifice
- 2014 & 2015 Bertheau Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes

Posted by Ian McFadden

I've been on a Bertheau kick lately. The reason is simple: few wines capture the haunting beauty of Chambolle like Bertheau does.

For me, one of the best places to witness Bertheau's work is their Chambolle 1er Cru Charmes bottling.

Bertheau's Charmes offers a perfect glimpse into what makes Bertheau so special. It delivers an incredible amount of finesse and beautiful refinement. The issue is that it comes from a 0.66ha parcel and can be maddening to track down.

Today, I'm happy to offer Bertheau's 2014 & 2015 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes for $99.95 & $129.95, respectively. The best pricing is on mixed 4-packs at $429.80.

Before continuing, I should mention that quantities are very limited.

The two vintages serve nicely as bookends. 2014 is more bright and nervy, and 2015 is riper and defined by its power. Bertheau nailed both vintages.

Bertheau's 2014s are gorgeous - crackling with energy and bursting with Chambolle's beguiling perfume. In classic fashion, the 2014 Charmes thrives on understatement and subtlety. It's bright with haunting aromatic complexity and a silky, racy spine.

The way that the 2015 vintage dovetailed with Bertheau's style is really amazing. The Charmes is sleek and refined but possesses more punch and velvety texture than you typically encounter in the wine.

The 2015 will almost certainly age well on its density, but the 2014 has all of the qualities that allow Bertheau's wines to age so brilliantly. What typically allows Bertheau's wines to evolve for decades is how finely calibrated they are, how perfectly balanced. I strongly encourage you to pick up a couple of bottles of each, but please keep in mind that quantities are limited. Give us your ideal order, and we'll try our best.

2014 & 2015 Bertheau Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes

2014 Chambolle-Musigny1er Cru Les Charmes

Special Bottle Price: $99.95
Burghound: "A notably floral nose features the super fresh, admirably pure and cool essence of red berry fruit aromas that possess lovely complexity. There is a lovely sense of underlying tension to the attractively textured and rich medium-bodied flavors that are supported by quite fine-grained tannins before culminating in a balanced, sneaky long and naturally sweet finish."

2015 Chambolle-Musigny1er Cru Les Charmes
Special Bottle Price: $129.95
Burghound: "Here too there is enough wood present to remark upon framing the spicier and more layered nose of pomegranate, red cherry, plum and lavender scents where a whisper of orange peel is present. Once again there is more volume and richness to the delicious, stylish and refined flavors that also coat the palate on the seductively textured and lingering finale. Like the 1er, this is relatively powerful but should be able to drink well early yet age effortlessly for a decade or perhaps even longer."
