Chateauneuf Royalty for a Steal
2009 Mont Redon
Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Lowest Price in the Nation

"For my palate, Château Mont-Redon is far and away the finest current producer in the region of Châteauneuf du Pape"
-John Gilman

Today, we offer a rarity: a place where a historical, and as Gilman's note makes clear, a benchmark domain intersects with ridiculous value. Such things seldom happen and should be celebrated.

This is one the best values that we've seen all year, and at the lowest price in the nation.

Gilman comes right out and calls the wines "Burgundian" in their sensibilities. That's not off the mark at all. Mont Redon delivers a similar energy, a level of detail and elegance.

Mont Redon stands apart from its peers in Châteauneuf. While we have nothing against meaty, brawny CDPs, tasting something like Mont Redon, with its combination of focus and finesse along with ageworthy concentration, is revelatory.

2009 Mont Redon boasts a killer poise and freshness with a cool, dark mineral bone structure and soaring garrigue notes. The palate thrives on seamless and satiny threads of black cherry, wild strawberry and burnt forest floor notes.

There's no way around it, Châteauneufs have turned a corner some time ago to pursue a style of high-octane power and richness. Mont Redon has stood tall as a hold out of the old-fashioned style, a period when Châteauneufs delivered elegance and poise - exactly how we like them.

Mont Redon has the good fortune of having some of the greatest terroir in all of Châteauneuf. In his thoughtful piece on the estate, Gilman notes, "along with Château Rayas, it was one of the few 'grand crus' in the region prior to the adoption of the Appellation Contrôlée system in the 1920s."

Mont Redon's style and the pedigree really start to pay dividends with time in the cellar. The aging capacity is legendary; wines from the 70s are still very much alive today. Robert Parker mentions the 1949 as one of the 25 best wines of his lifetime.

The 2009 vintage in Châteauneuf is one of the strongest vintages in the incredible stretch of grand wines made in 05, 07, 09 and 10. The 09s are concentrated with power and layered complexity. In terms of Mont Redon, the vintage brings the restrained wines out of their shell a bit and beautifully showcases the quality of the estate.

2009 Mont Redon is something that we advise you to go deep on, and we've created a special 6-pack pricing for this reason. The value, the style and the track record for aging is just too compelling.
