Checking All The Boxes:
2023 Le Puy De L'Ours Savigny-Lès-Beaune Rouge Les Follettes

Posted by Ian McFadden

Since Le Puy De L'Ours' first vintage in 2021, I've been closely following the domaine.

Even in the debut of the tricky 2021 vintage, there was clear potential. Across the lineup, the wines possessed a well-articulated honesty and nuanced accessibility that really captured my interest.

When I tasted the 2023s, it was clear that the wines were ready for prime time.

The Savigny Les Follettes may very well be the best place to witness this domaine's style and profound success in the 2023 vintage. Les Follettes is sourced from vines planted between 1960 and 1979. These old vines are felt in Les Follettes' earth-steeped sappiness and grippy presence.

The 2023 Les Follettes has a wonderfully sculpted feel to it, combining beautiful fruit with earth and mineral. There are dark soil notes, dried herbs, underbrush, rocks, stones, and more. The clarity and detail on display are pretty amazing.

For many years, Le Puy De L'Ours' Juliette Puyperoux and Jean Orsoni wanted to start a domaine. In 2019, they acquired a 3.5ha vineyard from Puyperoux's grandmother and have since thoughtfully added vineyards. From the start, they practiced organic farming and low-intervention winemaking. Their intention is to let the vineyards express themselves as clearly as possible.

It's really nice to see this domaine hitting its stride. The 2023 Les Follettes is a really exciting bottle and checks all of the boxes of what I seek in red Burgundy.
