Castell’in Villa is one of the greatest producers of traditional Chianti Classico.
This is Sangiovese as it should be: finessed, harmonious, and understated.
The fact that the Riserva from Castell'in Villa's inaugural 1971 vintage is still stunning today testifies to how finely crafted these traditional Chiantis are.
The 2015 Riserva is a dream brew of concentration, complexity, and purity. This is a power house example of Castell'in Villa. There's an unusual intensity and punch to the wine. Yet, it remains graceful and shows intricate layers of fruit, earth, spice, and herbs.Â
The Chianti Classico Riserva is sourced from Castell'in Villa's best vineyards in the southeast corner of Castelnuovo Berardenga. The area is known for producing some of Chianti Classico's most powerful and best wines. Castell'in Villa's Riserva makes the breeding that Castelnuovo Berardenga is capable of very obvious.Â
Castell'in Villa is one of the most historic, time-tested estates in Chianti. The 2015 Riserva is clearly a distance runner, and a dazzling one at that.

Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media: "The 2015 Chianti Classico Riserva is a big, potent wine that is going to need a number of years to be at its most expressive. Today, I am quite taken by the wine’s sheer heft, which is unusual for an estate where the wines tend to be a bit more restrained than this. Then again, we are in Castelnuovo Berardenga, where the wines can carry quite a bit of volume. Black cherry, game, licorice, menthol, sage and lavender open with a bit of coaxing. This is a super-classic Riserva from one of the most old-school producers in Chianti Classico."
