Clarity and Finesse in the Northern Rhône:
2024 Gérard St-Joseph Rouge Le Blanchard

Posted by Ian McFadden

We first offered Gérard's Saint-Joseph in 2017. It quickly became one of our core Northern Rhône offers.

Le Blanchard is one of Saint-Joseph's coolest vineyards. Here, Saint-Joseph possesses an unusual finesse, agility, and perfume—elements that it shares with Côte-Rôtie. It all adds up to an exciting and gorgeous example of Syrah.

Xavier Gérard has maintained a low profile, but he's among the most talented winemakers in the northern Rhône.

Gérard was introduced to his importer, none other than Neal Rosenthal, by the great Côte-Rôtie classicist Bernard Levet. Xavier Gérard took over his family's small domaine in earnest in 2012 and, in no time, turned out incredibly elegant and traditionally made Syrah and Viognier.

The majority of Gérard's holdings are in Côte-Rôtie and Condrieu. His Saint-Joseph comes from Le Blanchard, a vineyard just south of Condrieu. Its cooler location helps the wine maintain amazing precision and brightness.

In the classically styled 2024 vintage, the beautiful precision and brightly delineated aromatics of the wine are on full display. It has a captivating perfume with bright notes of berry fruit, herbs, and flowers. Everything is rendered with great clarity, and there's a beautiful thread of minerality.

Gérard's Saint-Joseph pretty much sells out each time we offer it. The explanation is simple: it's an extremely appealing, honest northern Rhône Syrah at a fair price. Please give us your ideal order, and we'll try our best.
