Class and Brilliance:
2004 Taittinger Comtes de Champagne

Posted by Ian McFadden

When Comtes de Champagne is on, it can reach heights few Champagnes can achieve.

The 2004 is jaw-droppingly good.

The Côte des Blancs was the star of the 2004 vintage: the wines have an ultra-clear, super-fine chalky minerality and a gorgeous rigor - exactly what I look for in Champagne. The 2004 Comtes de Champagne exemplifies these qualities. Every bottle that we open is beautiful.

Along with Krug's Clos de Mesnil, Dom Ruinart, Salon, and Selosse, Comtes de Champagne is the quintessential Blanc de Blancs. The 2004 epitomizes the regal minerality and finesse that defines this wine in all its glory.

Comtes de Champagne is Taittinger's prestige cuvée, first released in 1952 and sourced from some of the Côte des Blancs' top Grand Crus (Avize, Le Mesnil and Oger along with a little Chouilly and Cramant).

The wine can show its share of richness, but its hallmark is one of elegance and impeccable class and breed. What makes me so excited about the 2004 is how outrageously pure and detailed this wine is.

Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media (May 2013): "I am thrilled with the way the 2004 Comtes de Champagne continues to evolve in bottle. A few years ago, the 2004 was quite focused and linear, in the style of the vintage, but more recently, the wine has begun to fill out beautifully. The 2004 remains bright, with a full range of citrus, white flower and mineral nuances that dance on the palate. A brisk, saline-infused finish rounds things out beautifully in a Comtes that impresses for its crystalline purity. I expect the 2004 will always remain a bit cool next to the more opulent 2002, but it is still drop-dead gorgeous."
