Bertheau is a producer that we keep returning to.
The reasons are pretty simple: Bertheau's wines are beautiful, pure examples of Chambolle. For us, Bertheau should be on the short lists of collectors.
They are textbook examples of the finesse, the perfume and silken elegance that make Chambolle some of our favorite Burgundies.
Among Chambolle's 1er Crus, Amoureuses is the undisputed best - for many, Amoureuses is worthy of Grand Cru status. The amount of refinement and intensity that Amoureuses delivers is, for sure, on that level.
Today, we're happy to offer Bertheau's Chambolle's 1er Cru, Amoureuses.

In general, Amoureuses is never in good supply. It may very well be the most sought-after 1er Cru. Bertheau's is an extreme example of this rarity. He only has .32 ha. The bottles being offered today are the only ones available in the country.
Bertheau's wines are defined by their grace, their subtlety. These are wines that are seemingly devoid of artifice. There's nothing loud or flashy about them. They speak quietly with a gorgeous purity and precision. The comparison that we always make is with the wines of Jacky Truchot and Jean-Marie Fourrier. The more we taste Bertheau's wines, the more excited we get about them.
With his Amoureuses, Bertheau lets the nobility of the site shine in all its glory. "Classy juice" is how Burghound sums it up, which is a nice pithy way to capture the wine.
I was very impressed by the 2011 Burgundies when I tasted them this winter. The vintage has a lovely freshness and beautiful clarity of fruit. The wines are well concentrated and their harmonious structure bodes very well for how they will age.
This is exactly the sort of vintage where Bertheau's winemaking style thrives. His 2011 1er Cru Amoureuses boasts a mineral-laden weightless intensity, a pinpoint definition and a wonderfully sensuous texture that only Chambolle can possess.
Bertheau's holdings in Amoureuses only amount to .32ha and 2011 is a short vintage in Burgundy (yields were down 30%.) Bertheau's Amoureuses is a beautiful example of Chambolle's best 1er Cru, but sadly not a plentiful one.
