In the Loire, Clos Rougeard is without peer when it comes to refinement and ageability.
Today, I'm very excited to offer an extensive selection of Rougeard's wines, spanning over two decades and covering everything from their "Clos" to their single-vineyard bottlings from Poyeux, Bourg and the white from Brézé.
Brézé is a legendary site praised throughout the centuries. It is a higher elevation site that is defined by its tuffeau soils, a chalky limestone. What results from Brézé is some of the most refined, complete, and mineral expressions of the Chenin Blanc grape. Rougeard's example is other-worldly.
The Clos bottling is a blend of different sites but, like Roumier's Chambolle or Coche's Meursault AC, the Clos transcends any barriers that the label of "basic bottling" would usually carry. Bottles with a couple of decades of age have been jaw-droppingly good.
Les Poyeux is a lieu-dit planted to 50-year old Cabernet Franc vines. Poyeux is a stunning bottle. In certain vintages, it can go head-to-head with the mighty Bourg. Poyeux dazzles with its combination of savory depth and beautifully precise, high-toned floral and spice notes.
Le Bourg is a 1ha vineyard composed mainly of vines between 75-95 years old. This is the ultimate expression of Loire Cabernet Franc in terms of class, longevity, and complexity.
I'll bring this to a close. Clos Rougeard is Loire royalty, and finding the wines in quantity is very difficult. Give us your ideal order, and we'll try our best,
