Comte Lafon: Meursault to Volnay

Posted by Ian McFadden

Lafon has been on an absolute tear in recent vintages.

The wines have never had more clarity and finesse. I'm very happy to celebrate Lafon with this offering that covers his work in Meursault along with Monthélie and Volnay.

Lafon produced dynamite 2017s and you'll find an extensive selection, including magnums, below.

Lafon's 2018 1er Cru Genevrières deserves the spotlight. Along with Perrières and Charmes, Genevrières forms a holy trinity. With the exception of Coche-Dury, Genevrières doesn't get any better than Lafon's. The site is endowed with incredible harmony, drive, and precision. The 2018 is incredible. Burghound nails the wine when he writes: "This is terrific and a wine of class, grace and lace."

I couldn't resist including Lafon's 2017 Monthélie. For me, Lafon's Monthélie is similar to Roulot's Auxey-Duresses: a wine that shows plenty of class, but is defined by a pointed mineral character. The 2017 is a great vintage for the wine and promises to age beautifully on the midterm.

Lafon's whites get so much attention that most people overlook his work in Volnay. Along with d'Angerville and Lafarge, Lafon makes some of the top examples of Volnay. It is a masculine expression of Volnay. Santenots is a richer site with clay soils and hard rock underneath. The 2017 is a beautifully pristine example of the wine.

The list below represents one of Burgundy's legends in top form. All of the wines are not to be missed.
