Unlike Any Other Riesling
2012 Schäfer-Fröhlich Kupfergrube GG

"Dense, delicate and spicy on the dazzling finish. Another of the finest dry rieslings of the vintage." -Joel Payne

The Kupfergrube has always been an obsession of ours. It is, without a doubt, one of the most fascinating terroirs of the Nahe... of Germany.

With only .5 hectare under vine, this is Tim Fröhlich's rarest "Grand Cru" dry Riesling.

The Kupfergrube is a largely volcanic site with a high iron content. The wine is defined by a singular mineral expression, unlike any other Riesling in Germany. Layers of saline notes, smoke, pulverized rock and topsoil. What's equally amazing about Kupfergrube is how this fascinating minerality is interwoven into the citrus and florality.

Tim Fröhlich nailed the 2012 vintage. As always, the signature here is force: The presentation is painfully precise, concentrated and ends with a shimmering length.

These are extreme wines. There's no way around it. And it results in some of the most highly regarded and most popular German dry wines. It boasts a razor-sharp cut, brilliant clarity and kaleidoscopic depth of minerality. Tim Fröhlich has been on an incredible stretch going from strength-to-strength each year. The 2012 is another stunning example.

We've been excited about the 2012 vintage since we first tasted it, but as the months have passed we've only grown more impressed. 2012 is shaping up to be the best vintage that we've tasted since 2001.

Tim Fröhlich is without a doubt one of the most skillful and dedicated winemakers in Germany. He's dead serious in the vineyard about restricting yields; the same goes for the cellar. These are intense, first-class wines. Kupfergrube brings Fröhlich's intensity into a singular and profoundly compelling direction.
