Côte-Rôtie In Full Glory: 2014 Levet Côte-Rôtie La Chavaroche Magnums

Posted by Joe Salamone

When it comes to unyieldingly honest and unapologetically traditional Côte-Rôtie, Levet's wines are without peer.

They are wildly untamed, beautifully compelling and an utterly authentic expressions of Syrah.

Levet's Chavaroche has long been one of the smartest buys for your cellar, especially when it comes to steadfastly traditional Northern Rhône wine. The price for many Northern Rhônes have gone vertical in recent years. In this context, the 2014 magnums look like a steal.

The 2014 vintage shows Levet in its full glory. It has a seriously gorgeous finesse and texture.

The wine is deep, dense and savory, while remaining beautifully expressive, lifted and bright. In 2014, the wine offers soaring aromatics and is animated by incredible freshness, energy and snap.

Chavaroche is a brutally rocky and steeply-terraced southwest facing vineyard. Levet is meticulous in the vineyard, but the grapes simply do their thing in the cellar – vinification is thoughtful, but there’s no artifice at work.

Neal Rosenthal, Levet’s importer, isn’t shy about singling Chavaroche out: “There is no more consistently great wine in our portfolio than Levet’s La Chavaroche…If you want the truest of Côte-Rôties…if you admire both the intellectual and the savage, then this is a must-buy wine.”

With age, Levet's wines become even more nuanced, captivating and refined. For us, magnums are essential. The 2014 is a vintage that we expect to evolve beautifully. As we've mentioned before, these are wines that tend to disappear quickly.
