Cult Drouhin in 750ml, 1.5L and 3.0L - Clos des Mouches

One of the Secrets of Burgundy
2008 Drouhin Beaune 1er Cru
Clos des Mouches Rouge and Blanc
Regular Bottles, Magnums and Double-Magnums!

Unlike Vosne-Romanee or Puligny-Montrachet, Beaune has little of the obvious cachet, the easy name-recognition...

...which is sort of the point.

Because this is where the values are, especially in today's ultra-competitive Burgundy market. Beaune has no Grand Crus and largely rests in the shadows of its more famous neighbors, overwhelmed by the inescapable reputation of Montrachet.

And while the great majority of vineyards in Beaune deserve this lackluster attitude, the 14-hectare Clos des Mouches is the unlikely diamond in the rough.

For this reason, it's wildly underpriced, one of the few remaining secrets of Burgundy. If this wine is overlooked by the general public, the collectors have long had their eyes on it. This is a wine that is most often given plenty of space in the glossy cellars filled with Grand Cru Burgundy and First Growth Bordeaux.

Today we present a spectacular parcel of both the red and white Clos des Mouches in the rigorous and classic 2008 vintage. We have regular bottles as well as very rare magnum and double-magnum formats - every bottle priced razor-sharp.

We've written about this exceptional wine before (and on all occasions the wines have sold out near-immediately). And we'll write about it again, because this is one of our absolute favorite Drouhin bottlings, a wine that without doubt flirts with Grand Cru quality in the best years, to the unending bewilderment of just about everyone.

The 2008s are classic wines, so beautiful, so pure - they absolutely sparkle. The Rouge is classic Drouhin, with that jewel-box fruit, great spicy fruit, beautiful aromatics and a looking-glass of soil and mineral. Patience will be required with this wine though when it comes into form (say 5 years for the regular bottles, longer for the large-formats) it will be a bottle to reckon with. (You'll be laughing at the price you paid.)

The Blanc is an absolute cult bottle. Seriously, we had more than one customer/friend of the store approach us at La Paulée after tasting the 2008. There really isn't much not to like here: Beautiful white flowers and an airy, bouncy citrus, great soothing extract and a polished expression of mineral that certainly flirts with Grand Cru quality.

This is also a historic Drouhin bottling - it's one of the first sites acquired by Maurice Drouhin in the 1920s, when it was planted entirely to Pinot Noir. As the story goes, he found some very old documents that stated Chardonnay was once planted there, and so he replanted roughly half the site to Chardonnay, with electrifying results.

And the wines can age... they are structured for the long-haul. Allen Meadows (aka the Burghound) has written about being floored by rather recent tastes of the 1945 and 1949 Clos des Mouches.

So grab as much as you can, while you can.

Please give us your maximum order and we'll do the best we can though given the rarity of the large-formats, we will likely have to allocate these. We will do our best to confirm orders by the end of the day - all orders subject to confirmation.
