Last week, we offered Gonon's 2019 Saint Joseph Blanc Les Oliviers. Today, we return with the Saint-Joseph Rouge.
The amount of gracefulness that Gonon is able to coax from the hills of Saint-Joseph is extraordinary.
On paper, Saint-Joseph may come in behind Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, and Cornas in terms of prestigious northern Rhône appellations. However, Gonon's work majorly upsets these neat categories.
Gonon’s signatures are a pure and clear profile with an intricate and detailed presentation of blackberries, olives, violets, spice, and forest floor notes wrapped around a smoke-infused minerality. This is northern Rhône authentically rendered with the utmost care.
All of this helps explain why Gonon's wines are some of the most sought after wines of the northern Rhône.
The 2019 Saint-Joseph is concentrated and beautifully clear. Given the amount of harmony and gripping depth that it possesses, you can safely expect it to evolve into an absolutely stunning example of the northern Rhône.
In closing, I'll just mention that this is a modest parcel. Gonon's wines have long been recognized as being world-class. I doubt these bottles will stick around for long.
