D'Angerville Rarity
2012 D'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Caillerets

Last Friday, we sent a Clos des Ducs offering. When the dust settled, not a single bottle remained.

Today, we focus on the rarest of d'Angerville's 1er Cru's.

D'Angerville has a mere 0.65ha in Caillerets. For many Burgundy experts, Caillerets is one of the best sites in Volnay. For many, if Volnay were to have Grand Crus, Caillerets would be at the top of the list.

Of d'Angerville's tops sites (Clos des Ducs, Taillepieds and Champans), Caillerets is by far the hardest to get a hold of. If Caillerets doesn't get the same buzz as its 1er Cru peers, it's simply because there's not very much of it.

It's a supremely elegant Volnay. If Clos des Ducs possesses a regal power, Caillerets is all about tense, precise and pinpoint refinement. There's an ultra-elegant thread of minerality coursing through. Reminiscent of wet, crushed up stones - caillerets are the small, light-reflective pebbles that make up much of the soil.

Caillerets can be shy in its youth, another reason why it may be left outside of that Clos des Ducs-sized spotlight. But when it hits its stride, Caillerets is a "wow" wine. This wine has incredible aging potential.

D'Angerville produced a beautiful cast of 2012s. They all have a gorgeous combination of structure, high-energy punch and haunting perfume. The 2012 Caillerets is one of the clearest snapshots of this site that we've seen.

The beauty and the gripping minerality of the 2012 Caillerets comes at a cost. D'Angerville was down 75% in 2012. There's only a tiny amount available. Please give us your ideal order and we'll try our best.
