2010 Willi Schaefer Reconsidered
Wine Advocate Mosel Reviews are Out
Final Call for the Amazing 2010 Schaefers
David Schildknecht's 2010 Mosel reviews just came out...
...and among the stars of the vintage are the charming, magical wines of Willi and Christoph Schaefer.
If this isn't particularly shocking - this tiny estate, after all, produces some of the most loved and magical wines in the entire Mosel - 2010 was a particularly misunderstood and maligned vintage... written off by so many people even before the wines were bottled, before the story had been told.
This offer is about setting the record straight because what this vintage produced, in the right hands, arewines of simply incredible breadth and complexity, wines that are dense and detailed and incisive and cutting...an improbable and unbelievable combo.
For the non-believers, the doubters as well as the faithful who want to re-up, today we present the final tranche of the top bottlings of 2010 Willi Schaefer.
If you decided to skip 2010 in Germany, you should reconsider right now.
The focus is on two bottlings, two vineyards, two Pradikats: The Himmelreich Spätlese and the Domprobst Auslese #1.
As for the former, it is a nervy, electric Spätlese, sizzling yet never losing focus or fraying into 1,000 pieces like many wines from this vintage. Schildknecht says it makes "for a levitating and irresistible performance that finishes with tenacity and panache." I thought the vineyard made a dazzling Spätlese, so complete and complex and refreshing and delicious. I will not tell you how many bottles of this I have consumed - this is an awesome Schaefer that will go on and on for decades.
Then, there is the Auslese - truly this is the call of the vintage and Domprobst Auslese #1 is simply one of the wines of the vintage.
Schildknecht says the wine "calls to mind the amazing Schaefer Domprobst of 1975" and then goes on to compose a sentence that is a poetic alliteration and if even 30% of it is true, this wine more than justifies its tariff: "...an almost explosive profusion on a palate whose levity, juicy generosity and perfumed persistence is guaranteed to reel you back again and again."
So little wine to go around - so, so, so good. Do inquire about other 2010 Schaefer bottlings... we have a few tucked here and there.
