For years now, Roagna has been one of the most exciting estates in all of Piedmont.
Along with Conterno, Mascarello, and Rinaldi, Roagna is a part of Piedmont's elite.
As Antonio Galloni's note makes clear, the 2017 Vecchie Viti is a seriously impressive Barolo. We recently tasted through all of Roagna's 2017 VVs The Pira was the standout and just a knockout bottle of Barolo by any measure.
I'm happy to offer Roagna's 2017 Barolo La Pira Vecchie Viti at the lowest price around - $329.95.
While Roagna is closely associated with Barbaresco, the Barolo Pira is, along with Barbaresco Pajè, a flagship bottling.
Roagna's Pira is always one of the most finessed and lifted of their collection. The Roagna family purchased the monopole site in 1989. It is endowed with vines going back to 1937 and a fascinating soil composition of iron-rich limestone and blue and grey marls.
The Vecchie Viti comes from Roagna's oldest vines in the site. In any vintage, it offers an incredible amount of nuance and depth. The 2017 is really impressive. It's shocking how the wine manages to combine such density and elegance. The wine covers an amazing range - jaw-dropping - layered red fruits, game, earth, tar, herbs, spice, etc.
There's no doubt that this traditional Barolo will age beautifully. It is one of the absolute high points of the vintage and should not be missed.

Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media: "The 2017 Barolo Pira Vecchie Viti dazzles from the very first taste. It offers a wild intoxicating bouquet married to notable depth with firm yet polished tannins that wrap it all together. Sweet red fruit blood orange rose petal cinnamon dried herbs and star anise build as this rich yet classically austere Barolo shows off what it's got. It is a super-classic Roagna wine."
