Domaine Ponsot: Large Formats and Beyond

Posted by Ian McFadden

Laurent Ponsot is one of the most singular, most compelling minds in all of Burgundy, and his wines reflect that.

Today, we pay tribute to his iconoclastic genius with a collection of rarities, benchmark bottles and more.

Ponsot produces some of the most individual Burgundies you'll ever taste, and some of the best. There is a signature at Ponsot that sets them apart from everything in the Cote d'Or. Earlier this year, Laurent Ponsot left domaine Ponsot, closing the book on three decades of extraordinary winemaking.

Ponsot's Clos de la Roche is one of the most individual Burgundies you'll ever taste, and one of the best. Not to mention one of the longest lived - it's a long-distance runner that can age gloriously for 30 years or more. It's a wine of majesty and unabashed animal power, but it's still beautifully refined. We're happy to offer magnums of the amazingly transparent 2014 and the grand and saturating 2015.

Without a doubt, the greatest rarity on the list is the double-magnum of 2009 Clos St. Denis Très Vieilles Vignes. It's sourced from a 0.45ha parcel of 100+ year old vines. Ponsot's Clos St. Denis TVV offers jaw-dropping concentration, depth and finesse. The 2009 is especially stunning. Burghound writes, "this has the goods to give the brilliant '05 a run for its money."

The 1er Cru Monts Luisants sits above the Grand Cru Clos de la Roche. The very stony soil and high altitude has a history of producing stunning, incisive wines. It's from Luisants that Ponsot releases one of the most fascinating white wines of Burgundy.

Clos des Monts Luisants is a monopole of Ponsot and is based entirely on century-old Aligoté vines. If Aligoté has a reputation for producing work-a-day wines, Ponsot's Clos des Monts Luisants is something entirely different. It's a wine of enormous class and distinction.

Finally, there's the 2014 Corton Charlemagne in magnums and double-magnums. In the outrageously strong 2014 white Burgundy vintage, the Corton Charlemagne shows amazing clarity and layered complexity.

Before wrapping things up, I should mention that everything on offer is very limited. Please give us your ideal order and we'll try our best.
