2010 Dönnhoff MAGNUMS
Spätlese and Grosses Gewächs
SPECIAL OFFER ONLY FOR DÖNNHOFF BUYERS

Dönnhoff is great, we all know it - so today let's just focus on the fact that Riesling magnums are perhaps the coolest looking bottles in the world.

They look like Brancusi-esque sculptures - Bird in Flight filled with 1.5 liters of the purest, most noble wine out there.

Consider that Brancusi's Bird in Flight sold in 2005 for $27.5 million and contains absolutely NO DÖNNHOFF WINE INSIDE IT.

Yup, today's rare bottles are a steal at well under $27.5 million - they are also just about the only magnums of Dönnhoff in the U.S...  I had to ask a few times for magnums of Grosses Gewächs but finally got them. This is in fact our first-ever offering for GG mags!

See the selection below and keep in mind that we have between 12 and 24 of each bottle and that's it. So give us your maximum order and we'll do our best.

2010 Dönnhoff MAGNUMS

2010 Niederhauser Hermannshöhle Spätlese 1.5L
Special Magnum Price: $125.95

John Gilman, View from the Cellar: The 2010 Hermannshöhle Spätlese is another very beautiful example of the vintage. The wine today offers up a stunning, crystalline expression of its slate minerality on both the nose and palate, to go along with a superb aromatic mix of sweet grapefruit, orange peel, incipient notes of petrol and a topnote of orange zest. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and very pure on the attack, with a kaleidoscopic base of minerality, snappy acids and a very long, focused and electric finish. This wine is beautifully light on its feet and so intensely flavored that it is almost painful to taste today in its youth. It is a beautiful bottle of Spätlese that seems likely to be a stylistic mix of the 2001 and 2004. 2016-2050.

2010 Oberhauser Brucke Spätlese 1.5L
Special Magnum Price: $105.95

John Gilman, View from the Cellar: The 2010 Oberhäuser Brücke Spätlese is a beautifully filigreed bottle that really shows off this great terroir. The bouquet is deep, precise and vibrant, as it soars from the glass in a mélange of blood orange, pink grapefruit, glorious minerality, citrus zest and a gentle topnote of honeycomb. On the palate the wine is medium-full, tight and racy, with lovely filigree, fine midpalate depth, bright acids and superb length and grip on the nascently complex finish. As this wine has a pretty serious girdle of acidity at the present time, it is entirely possible that it will prove to be even better than my initial note. 2016-2045.

2010 Hermannshöhle Grosses Gewächs 1.5L
Special Magnum Price: $135.95

John Gilman, View from the Cellar: In 2010, the Hermannshöhle Grosses Gewächs is the top dry Riesling in the cellar, but it is a very close race between this and the stunning Dellchen. The deep and beautifully complex bouquet on the Hermannshöhle delivers scents of pink grapefruit, lemon peel, wild yeasts, incipient notes of petrol and a stunningly complex base of minerality. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, tight and tensile, with a rock solid core of fruit, laser-like focus and great length and grip on the very mineral-driven finish. All three of the Grosses Gewächs bottlings in the Dönnhoff cellars this year show beautiful acid integration, as the snappy acids are seamlessly woven into the body of the wine without losing any cut or precision on the backend. This is no small feat in 2010! 2018-2045+.

2010 Dellchen Grosses Gewächs 1.5L
Special Magnum Price: $125.95

John Gilman, View from the Cellar: The 2010 Dellchen Grosses Gewächs is very refined and elegant this year, with the usual power of this vineyard coming across as brilliant intensity of flavor. The bouquet is deep and very classy, as it jumps from the glass in a blaze of tart orange, lime, grapefruit, petrol, crystalline minerality and orange zest. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and beautifully complex, with fine mid-palate depth, excellent focus and balance and a very, very long, tensile finish. This will be an extremely long-lived Dellchen Grosses Gewächs. 2017-2045.

2010 Felsenberg Grosses Gewächs 1.5L
Special Magnum Price: $119.95

John Gilman, View from the Cellar: The 2010 Felsenberg Grosses Gewächs bottling all hails from the Türmchen section of the vineyard and is excellent in this vintage. The superb bouquet offers up scents of white cherries, sweet grapefruit, very complex stoniness, petrol, citrus peel and a distinctly smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and utterly seamless, with a rock solid core of fruit, great focus and cut, lovely balance and excellent grip on the long and tensile finish. In comparison to the Felsenberg Trocken, here the snappy acids are even better integrated into the body of the wine and even more completely buffered by dry extract. A very impressive bottle. 2015-2040.
