You'd be hard-pressed to find a white Burgundy at this price point that competes with Lamy's Bourgogne Chataigners.
Les Chataigners has become a crucial part of my inexpensive white Burgundy arsenal.
Hubert Lamy is one of the standard-bearers for St. Aubin and his St. Aubin "Derrière Chez Edouard" and Criots-Batard-Montrachet are aggressively hunted down by serious collectors.
Across the board, Lamy's are grandly sculpted wines with eye-opening rigor. Their track-record for aging owes a lot to the density and firm, mineral backbones.
The Bourgogne Blanc Les Chataigners is sourced from a high altitude, low yielding vineyard that's just over 1ha. The site produces wines with a steely and stony minerality and a layer of high-toned richness.
The 2016 Les Chataigners is an especially intense version of the wine. The 2016 Burgundy vintage saw frosts and greatly reduced yields. The resulting wines show a fascinating combination of concentration and presence with cool fruit tones, verve, and crystal clear minerality. The Chataigners has an emphatic tensile mineral impression along with soaring aromatics.
I suggest stocking up because value in white Burgundy doesn't get much more impressive than this. This bottle has become a customer favorite. I anticipate a very strong response to this offer.
