Dostert:
Limestone and the Forgotten Mosel

Posted by Joe Salamone

It’s only a 20-minute drive from the sacred slate of Egon Müller and Peter Lauer to the forgotten Kimmeridgian limestone of the other, the forgotten, Mosel Valley.

This forgotten Mosel is called the “Obermosel,” or upper Mosel, and it represents the final flourish of Kimmeridgian limestone as it slams into the slate that dominates most of the Mosel.

This place had been largely overlooked, ignored even, until the wunderkind Jonas Dostert released his first wines in 2018 to serious critical praise.

Since then, Dostert has quickly established a formidable reputation among a very specific group of wine lovers – those who cherish extreme delineation and cut.

Fans of Dostert who know how hard these wines are to source should pounce without delay. This is not a large parcel, and we expect a quick sell-out.

For those of you who do not know Dostert, the style is extreme: His 2022 Chardonnay is a treatise of limestone and flowers, with all the searing-mineral presence of a still Champagne Blanc de Blancs.

Dostert’s shimmering Chardonnay is something like Chablis chiseled down to a dagger – a Kabinett Trocken sculpted from Chardonnay.

What has so fascinated people about Dostert’s wines is the ultra-diminutive scale of the wines, matched to a simply awesome clarity, detail, and saturation.

These wines cut deep into the palate, reverberate, and echo with truly shocking length.

The 2022 Chardonnay is perhaps the trophy of Dostert’s tiny output: It combines soaring floral aromatics with a tart-juicy green apple, ripe and glowing citrus, and simply profound focus.

The extreme tension of Dostert’s Chardonnay means that it benefits with a few hours open before drinking, or a gentle decant. On occasion, the wine will show better on day two than on day one. The structure and concentration also mean this bottle should evolve beautifully in the cellar. If you have the restraint, cellar a few bottles.

We feel very fortunate to be able to offer Dostert's 2022 Chardonnay. This is a wine that we rarely see more than a couple of cases of each vintage. We encourage you to get your orders in early.

Mosel Fine Wines: "The 2022er Chardonnay was made from young vines (planted in 2015) and the grapes were directly pressed, before the wine was fermented and aged in 228-liter used oak barrels along natural lines, i.e. without any intervention and was bottled unfiltered and with little SO2 added (30 mg/l). Light yellow in color, it offers a refined and delicate nose with nuances of yellow flowers, vineyard peach, pear, lavender, thyme, green apple, and orange zest. The wine is very well balanced on the palate, with a creamy, almost juicy, aromatic edge, superbly balanced by refreshing and ripe acidity. The finish is superbly energetic and very long. This Chardonnay is a real beauty and will easily gain from further ageing."
