2008 Dujac Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Combottes
Dujac's Combottes is a special wine.
It just has that magic - like Ramonet Ruchottes (featured this week and sold out), Lafarge Clos des Chênes, Drouhin Clos des Mouches or Fourrier Clos St. Jacques, to name a few off the top of my head (yes, there are many, many others).
To some extent, "that magic" is hard to capture in words. But it's there, and there's no mistaking it. Which is why Dujac's Combottes is one of those wines that sells out quickly every year.
Dujac is one of Burgundy's hallowed elites - the 2008 collection is certainly one of the best and quite possible the best of the vintage. There's no real debate there. And if their Grand Crus are headliners, blue-chip bottlings that deserve their reputations and prices, the Combottes should not be overlooked. Even (or especially?) for the top collectors, it never is.
Combottes is Gevrey, is has that "punch," but it's so much finer than that. Balanced, elegant, woven finely with mineral and earth and the dark, meaty fruit of Gevrey, yet silken too. The Combottes is so stylish, sexy.
It's a blockbuster 1er Cru - a wine that transcends the 1er Cru category and in 2008, it's exceptional. Mania for the 2009 Burgs has begun (and our program will be BIG), yet do not overlook the best of the 2008s. I know everyone's saying that, but do your own research. Many of the 2008s, including Dujac's Combottes, have gotten very, very serious praise. I don't think it's over-the-top to put the 2008 Combottes in the same sphere as the 2005 and only time will tell how the 2008 and 2009 compare.
This bottle has "that magic," and given its reputation, the smaller size of this parcel, the sharp pricing and expected demand, this is another offer that we expect to sell-out today.

Burghound: A very stylish and ultra fresh nose offers up classy if restrained red pinot fruit liberally laced with notes of stone and rose petal, both of which can be found on the detailed, pure and lacy middle weight flavors that are complex, focused, mouth coating, crisp and solidly persistent. I like the balance and punch.
