"A Modern Classic"
2010 Aldo Conterno Barolo Cicala
"...easily one of the wines of this great Barolo vintage." —Antonio Galloni
There's no way around it. People are just going crazy for 2010 Barolo. With good reason. It's the most impressive young Barolo vintage that I've tasted.
So what is so stunning about 2010 that is getting everyone into a furor? It was a vintage of extreme purity, with fruit that's at once perfectly clear and lavishly intense. There is this exciting point-counterpoint of lucidity and rich, deep fruit, and the combination is spectacular.
Antonio Galloni declared the Cicala to be "easily one of the wines of this great Barolo vintage."
Conterno's wines are built to last. There is a refined sense of austerity in youth, and any sharp edges become beautifully integrated with age. This is a wine you'll want to stow away for decades to come.
The entire line-up at Aldo Conterno is impressive, but the Cicala bottling is one of the most so. While Granbussia can border on overwhelming in its richness, Cicala, though by no means restrained, has an ethereal elegance even given its wealth.
While all eyes, and purchasing power, are definitely turned toward Piedmont, Conterno's prices have managed to remain remarkably steady. Given the monumentality of the vintage, and the Cicala's long lifespan, this is a serious value.
