Egon Müller Scharzhofberger Spätlese
1995 - 1996 - 1997
Rare Treasures of the Saar in PERFECT Condition

I wish I could write an email like this every week.

It would go like this: "A collector in Germany has decided to part with multiple cases of 1995, 1996 and 1997 Egon Müller Scharzhofberger Spätlese - every bottle bought on release and cellared still in original cardboard boxes (OCB)."

AND he's decided to sell them at a fair price.

Really, the pricing is MORE than fair - in fact, the only comparison pricing in the U.S. has the 1997 at over $40 more. The other vintages simply aren't available.

As much as I've always wanted to write this email, in my years as a wine merchant, I've never been able to... until today.

In my humble opinion these are some of the greatest wines on the face of the earth. Egon Müller is one of Germany's most hallowed producers - John Gilman describes the estate as "Germany's Domaine de la Romanee-Conti."

It's a matter of debate and opinion as to whether they are THE GREATEST estate in Germany, but if I had to cast my vote, I would probably be inclined to say yes. Why? For the history, the tradition, the hallowed old-vine parcel they own in the Scharzhofberger, the grace and delicacy and transparency of their wines, and for their magnificent ageability.

I've been fortunate enough to enjoy a fair share of older Egon Müllers, and not just the trophies - a bottle of 1976 Egon Müller KABINETT was just haunting... subtle, mossy, mineral... as if it had sprung up from the Saar itself and been sprinkled with lemon zest. Yup, these can age.

The collection today comes to you with well over a decade of slumber, yet you can expect these wines to be very young, to be just coming out of their shells, presenting the real majesty of Saar Riesling. (See pictures of bottles in cellar below - sorry about the quality of the photographs, but it's not easy to shoot in a dark cellar!)

Every vintage is worth owning - I'm personally taking a few bottles of each, and balanced orders will be given preference, but for a quick run-down of the vintages, see below.

While the wines may not arrive until the fall (we're not going to rush delivery and risk an arrival in the heat of summer), it'll be worth the wait. To order, please email us at offers@crushwineco.com to this email or call the store at (212) 980-9463.

Egon Müller 1995-1997

1995 Riesling Scharzhofberger Spätlese

No comparison pricing available in the U.S. This is a lovely vintage for Egon Müller; the wines are well-balanced with good extract and acidity. Fantastic stuff.

1996 Riesling Scharzhofberger Spätlese

No comparison pricing available in the U.S. A more problematic vintage... but for purists, 1996 is being revisited and reconsidered. The top wines are vigorous and structured and pure - these are mineral-freak wines. Expect to cellar these longer.

1997 Riesling Scharzhofberger Spätlese

Compare at $212 This is a glorious vintage for the Saar and for Egon Müller - if we were prone to hyperbole, we'd say this is a legendary vintage...  and while only time will tell, right now we'd say these are close to legends, but not quite. In any event, they are very, very, very good. Ripe, full, dense with extract yet structured and clear and balanced. Superb stuff and, from this parcel, not to be missed.
