Egon Müller Auction
2000 Egon Müller Scharzhofberger Spatlese
Auction Bottling #6
This is a sort of ridiculous price for an Auction bottling by Egon Müller.
And really, there's one reason for this price - the vintage.
2000 was a very difficult vintage with a rainy harvest that encouraged botrytis, caused grapes to swell and burst, etc. It wasn't pretty.
This is hardly the sort of introduction one normally uses to try and sell wine, I realize... but to be honest, I don't know if I want to sell this wine. I'm personally very intrigued and I really want to taste the wine. I personally like tasting "off" vintages, I like tasting how the winemaker dealt with the vintage. My personal experience has been, more often than not, the wines over-achieve.
But I have not tasted Müller's 2000s, so I don't know - if you have any experience with Müller's 2000s I'd love to hear from you.
I think the price is very compelling - compare Egon Müller 2000 Auslese Auction half-bottles starting at $180, full bottles at $360. The provenance is great, we're talking a decade of perfect cellaring (the wine comes from the same German cellar as our past offerings) and I just have to believe that of all people, Egon Müller would step up and deliver with his Auction bottlings, even in a tough vintage.
At the end of the day, we'll see. I'm buying a few bottles for my cellar. There are only a few cases available, so if you'd like to join me, let me know.
