Michel Niellon's tiny estate (about 6 hectares in total) is most famous for its Chevalier and Bâtard-Montrachet - these are the rare trophy bottlings, Grand Crus that sell in the vicinity of $300 a bottle.
These are wines that I love, but for me Niellon's sweet spot lies in his 1er Crus. They represent one of the great intersections of value, quality and breeding.

Niellon's signature is a combination of weight, depth, a saturating presence on the palate with a strong streak of minerality, a muscular acidity and a fascinating thread of cool herbal resin veining through the round, yellow fruit. In short, this has everything we love in White Burgundy.
In 2012, all of this is amplified. By now, the vintage is infamous for its tiny yields and painfully small quantities. The resulting wines are insanely concentrated and deeply complex.
Niellon's 2012 1er Cru La Maltroie dramatizes the almost painfully intense nature of the vintage married to fresh, clear mineral notes and powerful acidity. When you factor in the breadth and complexity backed by the drive and the wash of minerals and spice this is one of most unique and captivating vintages of Maltroie we've encountered.
