Entering The Zone:
1996 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou

Posted by Ian McFadden

For nearly twenty years, I've had an immense fondness for the 1996 Ducru-Beaucaillou.

Whenever I see the wine priced well, I jump on it. I'm excited to have landed this modestly sized parcel.

I've always appreciated the classical Ducru-Beaucaillou. The 1996 is an absolutely brilliant example of this.

The 1996 Bordeaux vintage is pretty old school in its structure and profile. While always aging well, the 1996 Ducru-Beaucaillou has evolved beautifully and is clearly still holding plenty in reserve. At twenty-five years, it is entering the zone and should drink well for the next decade or more.

I love how the 1996 combines firm tannins with richness and finesse. The wine offers gorgeous aromatics of herbs, spices, minerals, leather, and tobacco. There's a serious amount of depth and class on display.

Ducru-Beaucaillou is located in the southern section of Saint-Julien. Its wines have always stood out in the appellation for their elegance and regal plushness. There's something that's both exciting and comforting about the wine.

The 1996 is one of the top examples of Ducru-Beaucaillou of the past few decades. This is undoubtedly the Château in top form. It's a wine that I love and have been impressed by each of the many times that I've drunk it.
