Feather-Weight Delicacy
Valdespino Manzanilla Deliciosa En Rama
Saca de Primavera 2014
Since its first release a couple of years ago, Valdespino's Manzanilla En Rama has been one of our favorites in the category.
As many of you know, Manzanillas are fino Sherries made close to the ocean, in Sanlúcar. These are the most delicate, feather-weight dry sherries out there, the ocean atmosphere brings a bracing, sea-breeze imbued note to the citrus-almond core.
As a category, Manzanillas are some of the most beautiful fino sherries around.
Valdespino, of course, takes this to the next level. Valdespino is one of the best bodegas in all of sherry country. Two barrels were released for this special En Rama bottling and it's clear that the selection was very rigorous.
En Rama (or very, very lightly filtered) sherries reveal another level of complexity and texture. There's little doubt that something was lost when a corporate and industrial mentality settled in the sherry region and eventually made heavily filtered sherries the norm.
I've always been a fan of the regular Manzanilla Deliciosa, but the En Rama version adds another dimension of flavor and energy to the saline elegance of Deliciosa.
All of this has been accentuated with some time in bottle. As much as we like Deliciosa En Rama (and many other top Manzanillas and Finos) on release, we like them even more after they've been in bottle for a year or so. With a year in bottle, this has evolved nicely, gaining depth and even more saline minerality.
The Deliciosa will shine with summer fare and is one of the first things that we reach for during the warm months. The level of class and complexity that this delivers for the price is just crazy. We suggest that you stock up.
