Firing On All Cylinders - Revisited:
2016 Bachelet Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Corbeaux

Posted by Ian McFadden

Bachelet's Corbeaux has become a very difficult bottle to find in quantity.

Before landing this parcel, it had been over three years since we were able to offer Bachelet's Corbeaux.

We first offered the 2016 Corbeaux just as the holidays were kicking into high gear and sadly, the wine didn't get the attention that it deserved. I'm happy to have another opportunity to offer it.

Bachelet is special - a tiny 4ha estate with an outsized reputation. The wines possess a haunting nuance and soulfulness. Every vintage I devote an incredible amount of effort tracking down as much Bachelet as I can get my hands on.

I tasted Bachelet's 2016s last winter and was amazed by their purity and concentration. This is easily one of my favorite collections of the vintage.

Corbeaux is a mysterious little plot of dirt, prone to being overlooked, as it is sandwiched directly next to the Grand Cru Mazis-Chambertin and the village of Gevrey-Chambertin itself. The vineyard is tough to classify, yet the choicest parcels create a wine that mirrors the complexity of the site itself and the mysteriousness that surrounds Corbeaux always makes it undervalued.

Bachelet's Gevrey Corbeaux comes from vines that are very old, ranging from 60 to 70 years in age. It is a powerful, deep and complex wine - it always shows an impressive concentration and Gevrey's typical muscle, but it carries its weight effortlessly, leaving an impression of fine-ness and discreetness.

The 2016 Corbeaux boasts an incredible amount of intensity and earthy complexity. The wine is dynamic and tension-filled with a thrilling wildness and presence. Bachelet is one of the most consistent producers that we know and the 2016 Corbeaux is dynamite.

I've had countless gorgeous bottles of Bachelet's Corbeaux with age. The 2016 promises to evolve into something utterly profound.
