2009 was a wildly successful vintage for Pergole Torte - Galloni just comes out and pronounces the 09 "flat-out great."
The vintage saw spells of heat and many of the wines are endowed with a generous coating of fruit. In the case of Pergole Torte, Montevertine's cool microclimate (one of the coolest in the area) paid off in spades in 09.
The 09 Pergole Torte shows the extra concentration that the 09 vintage gave the wines, but also has the energy and the stunning clarity and finesse that typifies the wine. The 09 shows a beautifully articulated ensemble of dark cherry fruit, smoke, and gorgeous layers of florality all delivered with a lovely sense of bounce and poise.
Pergole Torte really defines its own territory in terms of how clear, deeply complex, soaringly aromatic and ageworthy Sangiovese can be. It's a fairly subtle, graceful wine, but it's mind-blowing nonetheless.
Pergole Torte has that magical, life-affirming quality that only a few, very special wines possess. It's something that's easy to become obsessed with and possibly lose sleep over.
