"Focused, intense and linear"
- 2017 Ballot Millot Meursault 1er Cru Les Genevrières

The 2017s from Ballot Millot are thrilling.

Since the stunning 2014s, I've been watching this domaine very closely. The 2017s are seriously eye-opening.

For me, the most shocking wine of the superb lineup is the 1er Cru Les Genevrières.

I can remember digging into Burgundy wine books many years ago and reading about the holy trinity of Meursault 1er Crus, Perrières, Genevrières, and Charmes. The quick summary is that Charmes is known for its grandeur, Perrières for its refined, punchy mineral focus, and Genevrières, to some extent, falls in the middle. Many writers put Genevrières as a close second to Perrières.

Ballot Millot's 2017 Genevrières reminded me of the regard that so many wine scholars had given the site. The 2017 offers that much class and complexity. It's an absolute knock out of a wine.

Thankfully, the quality that Ballot Millot is turning out hasn't received widespread attention, and the prices are gentle, especially when it comes to the incredible 2017s.

Ballot Millot’s roots in Burgundy are seriously deep: they began amassing vineyards back in the 17th century. The domaine has been one to watch ever since Charles Ballot took over in 2001. When Ballot took over, he began reducing yields, improving farming practices, and updating equipment. The level of quality rose dramatically.

Stylistically, Ballot Millot falls between the reductive style of Coche and Roulot and the voluptuous, oily style of old-school Meursault producers. Ballot’s wines have undeniable energy and detail, without sacrificing richness.

The 2017 Genevrières is finely calibrated and irresistibly textured. The brightness and finesse that it offers are really impressive. I think Burghound's tasting notes capture the wine very well: "I very much like the sophisticated mouth feel as well as the refreshing salinity and this beauty should age effortlessly."

It's a wine of such harmony and complexity that I strongly encourage you to pick up a couple of bottles.

Burghound: "The naturally exotic nose reflects notes of spiced tea, orange peel and lychee nut. The super-sleek and silky middle weight flavors exhibit plenty of minerality on the focused, intense and linear finish. I very much like the sophisticated mouth feel as well as the refreshing salinity and this beauty should age effortlessly."
