Frighteningly Perfect:
2021 Ludes Kabinett "Monster"

Posted by Joe Salamone

"Julian Ludes completely nailed the vintage and the estate’s collection will go down in history as one of the finest at this traditional estate." -Mosel Fine Wines

We have in this vintage, with this producer and this wine, a perfect storm.

It is a vintage utterly perfect for the ruthlessly traditional style of this estate. We have a young grower taking over his family's winery and coming into the heights of his powers at exactly the right moment.

This is unquestionably one of the greatest Mosel Kabinetts of this astounding vintage.

Yet, as this is the first time these wines have been offered in larger distribution in the United States, they are relatively unknown. Thus, the entire collection represents an incredible value.

The pricing goes as low as $32.95 on four-packs.

The style at Julian's estate - Hermann Ludes - is so profoundly, quintessentially "Mosel." The razor-sharp yet polished angles of the Kabinett "Monster" remind me a bit of the masters of linearity, Egon Müller and Julian Haart.

Yet there is something unique here too, an "x-factor" that is undefinable - a vibrancy that feels raw, essential, and almost crackling with electricity.

While the name "Monster" refers to the size of the parcel (it is one of the largest sections of the Thörnicher Ritsch), this is still a very limited bottle of wine. We recommend ordering sooner rather than later.

Mosel Fine Wine: "The 2021er Thörnicher Ritsch Riesling Kabinett 'Monster' was made from fruit picked at 78° Oechsle in the prime south-facing western part of the vineyard and was fermented down to barely fruity-styled levels of residual sugar (37 g/l). It offers a stunning nose of white peach, green apple, bitter lemon, flowers, a dash of whipped cream, and fine spices. Lemony and mint drive the flavors on the subtly creamy and yet hugely vibrating palate. The finish is lifted up by a delicate touch of whipped cream. This is a stunning Kabinett in the making which more than reminds of some of the finest examples by Hofgut Falkenstein."
