There are few categories in wine that are harder sells than California Grenache. You only offer it if you really love it.
That's certainly the case with Enfield 2021 Grenache Brosseau Vineyard.
We tasted the wine and bought every bottle available. It's an utterly unique and compelling example of Grenache.
Enfield is one of our favorite New World producers. Whether it’s the unlikely Sonoma Coast Cabernet or Haynes Chardonnay, Enfield’s John Lockwood has an incredible knack for unearthing singular vineyards and teasing out every bit of uniqueness from the site.
The Brosseau Grenache comes from a site that in Lockwood's words "is cool enough to grow Pinot Noir". The Brosseau Vineyard is in the Chalone AVA, one of the most extreme places to grow grapes anywhere. It is a high-altitude and incredibly rocky vineyard that could pass for a Martian landscape. The section of the Brosseau vineyard that the Grenache is sourced from is especially rich in limestone.
What results is an incredibly energetic and bright example of the grape. This is Grenache like you've never tasted it before - floral, mineral, tensile, and above all, compact. It's concentrated and incredibly agile. Simply put, this is an exhilarating bottle.
For me, this is a not to be missed bottle. There is nothing to compare it to.
