"Genuinely Great"
2017 Drouhin Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches Blanc

Posted by Ian McFadden

Clos des Mouches is a very important site for Drouhin.

This prime mid-slope vineyard was one of the first purchases of Maurice Drouhin when he essentially established domaine bottlings in the 1920s.

Drouhin's Clos des Mouches quickly became an expectation-defying wine beloved by Burgundy insiders. On paper, it's a Beaune 1er Cru and nothing to get excited about. In actuality, Mouches boasts a complexity and longevity that rivals Grand Crus. Burghound’s Allen Meadows has raved about the 1945 and 1949 vintages.

Véronique Drouhin, the current winemaker, described the 2017 whites as ”genuinely great,” and we fully agree.

Mouches' sheer complexity and confounding nature make it one of my favorite Burgundies. For white Burgundy, 2017 is a vintage of supreme balance and seldom seen clarity and energy. The 2017 Mouches shows the vintage at its best.

Clos des Mouches Blanc is famous for its depth, nuance, and multifaceted complexity and the 2017 vintage delivers on all counts. Even in the context of Mouches' long and impressive history, the 2017 is jaw-dropping.

Neal Martin, Vinous Media: "The 2017 Beaune Clos des Mouches Blanc 1er Cru was picked September 1–6 in six different passes through the vineyard. It has quite a strict, conservative bouquet of vibrant citrus fruit infused with touches of linden and orange pith. The palate is quite assertive on the entry, conveying good weight. Like many white 2017s, it is lightly spiced, though this cuvée shows more marine influences and a tang of marmalade toward the persistent, intense finish. Very fine."
