German Elite:
2020 Schäfer-Fröhlich Stromberg Grosses Gewächs

Posted by Joe Salamone

Year after year, Tim Fröhlich issues some of Germany's best dry wines.

Since its debut vintage in 2012, the Stromberg GG has competed with the Felseneck GG for the honor of Schäfer-Fröhlich's top dry bottling.

The Stromberg is stylistically very different from Felseneck. It's a much more expansive and muscular expression with dark, staining minerality.

Schäfer-Fröhlich's signature is force and intensity combined with ruthlessly sharp detail. Every edge feels like it's been sharpened and brought into focus. The style works wonderfully with Stromberg.

The volcanic site was purchased from Tim Fröhlich's uncle, which is home to very old vines, including ungrafted vines and vines that are one-hundred years old. This is a powerhouse wine with verve and intense mineral punch.

You can expect the 2020 Stromberg GG to boast an amazing drive and transparency. For all of its intensity, the wine possesses a shocking refinement and delicacy delivering a cloud-like lightness.

This is our first Schäfer-Fröhlich offering in a number of years. The wines have such a strong following that they typically sell out before we have an opportunity to offer them. This year we're trying to get our offer out early, at sharp pricing, and start with one of the highlights of Schäfer-Fröhlich's impressive 2020 collection.
