Nearly 50 years of German winemaking history - prices starting at $29.95.
There are few experiences like aged Riesling; if this was the rarified realm of wine geeks and German scholars, things have changed.
First, more and more collectors are catching on to these wines and second (and not unrelated) back-vintage gems are getting harder and harder to find.
Today's offering, gathered from private cellars in both the U.S. and in Germany, represents our largest German cellar offer ever, with legendary German Rieslings like the 1959 Schloss Vollrads Beerenauslese (only one bottle available, in perfect condition) to Egon Müller's 1983 Scharzhofberger Auslese.
The list, the prices, speak for themselves, but a number of bottles deserve a bit more description.
1959 Wilhelm Gymnasium Falkensteiner Auslese
The Wilhelm Gymnasium owned some spectacular parcels in the Mosel and Saar back in the day. We've had a number of these bottles and the wine is beautiful - delicate and garden fresh, with a fine vein of citrus and stone fruit, a beautiful sheened minerality. Though this is an Auslese, as the bottle is 50+ years young, it is no longer sweet, the sugar having been mostly integrated. Even at this age, the wine's Saar origin is obvious!
1966 & 67 Staatsweinguter Steinberger Cabinet AUCTION
The Rheingau 66s and 67s we've had have been awesome - both are ripe vintages and the wines are still glowing. Keep in mind, in the 1960s the "Cabinet" designation was used for the estate's top wines - it has nothing to do with the "Kabinett" designation used after 1971. Also note: "Versteigerung" means auction - these are rare treasures and are very well priced.
1971 Dr. Thanisch Doctor Spätlese
The 1971ers are everything aged Riesling should be; bright, cut, balanced. This parcel of Dr. Thanisch comes from a great U.S. cellar and the wines are in stock. Most of the bottles do show a little bit of seepage (which is not unusual for Riesling young and old) but the colors and fills are great. In any event, we've marked these down to just under $100 so they are an absolute steal.
1975 Von Othegraven Altenberg Auslese
This is a great, great site in the Saar... a great producer. The 75s remain vigorous and delineated. Should be spectacular. Frankly, all the Von Othegravens are worth considering - very hard to find back-vintage wines from them.
Our best guess is that all of these wines will go fairly quickly - give us your dream order and we'll do our best, allocating so that as many people as possible get as much wine as possible. Many of these wines are in stock; one parcel is still en route from Germany and if temperatures rise too quickly, we will likely hold off shipping until the fall.
Just one thing to keep in mind as you peruse the list below:
WE WILL ONLY BE TAKING ORDERS VIA EMAIL - SO EMAIL US AT OFFERS@CRUSHWINECO.COM TO ORDER! This way we can log exactly when orders come in and allocate first come, first served. NO WEB ORDERS, NO PHONE ORDERS, NO EXCEPTIONS!
