Germany: 1990-2008
Single-Owner Cellar:
Perfect Provenance!
Today we offer TOP vintages (2001, 2007, 2008), breadth (Kabinett up to Auslese) and VALUE.
Oh - and every single bottle offered today was bought on release and perfectly stored.
You don't come across cellars like this very often. For the most part, those who cellar German wines drink them! Finding someone who is willing to part with back-vintage gems is rare indeed.
Today, however, we present just such a rarity.
While there are some cult-ish bottles that will disappear immediately (1990 Von Schubert, 2007 Willi Schaefer), there are also some "Crush legends" - wines that we fell in love with, sold... and then were sad when they were gone.
Top among these is the 2007 Schäfer-Fröhlich Felseneck Spätlese GK. This is likely one of the top Spätlese (if not THE top Spät) of the vintage; a truly epic, mind-bending wine that really solidified Tim Fröhlich's reputation as one of the best winemakers in Germany.
We bought as much of this wine as we could on release, and it was gone before we knew it. Today, we have a bit more. Last chance people - get this in your cellar!
The other sentimental legend is J.J. PrĂĽm's little-miracle 2008 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett. On release it was a bit coy, a bit closed and angular. Yet already there was something magical, a shimmering translucent quality that made you pay attention. In the five years since the vintage, the 2008s have proven themselves to be superbly agile, razor-sharp wines and this is simply one of the best Kabinetts of this angelic vintage. This is what Kabinett should be - stunning.
For fear of starting some sort of Nahe-riot, we'll just gloss over the 2007 Dönnhoffs. Because we really want to drink them all ourselves, we'll skip over the epic 2008 Adam Hofberg Kabinett.
Because there likely isn't a better value on the list, we'll ignore J.J. Christoffel's 2001 Auslese at just under $40.
Quantities are just too limited - there are just too many great wines we shouldn't focus on. YOU, however, shouldn't miss them.
