Jean & Pierre Gonon's wines are breathtaking examples of the northern Rhône. Today, I'm very happy to offer their red and white Saint-Joseph.

The Gonon brothers have amassed a cult following for their Saint-Joseph Rouge, but their Saint-Joseph Blanc remains much more elusive.

White Rhônes can be a tricky category. They can be dense, alcoholic, and ponderous. The best can be amazing, but for better or worse our tastes are very selective. Gonon's is one of our absolute favorites.

If the best Hermitage Blancs show incredible depth and glycerol richness, Gonon's Saint-Joseph Blanc Les Oliviers is sterner in its acid and mineral steak. The way that it ages is legendary. It can easily age for a couple decades. For us, it defines what's possible for Saint-Joseph Blanc.

Les Oliviers is special terroir for white grapes - it may very well be the best in the appellation. Taste Gonon's Blanc and you're immediately taken by its harmony, complexity and completeness. The 2018 is a really impressive edition combining power, verve, and a nice mineral backbone.

The signatures of Gonon’s red wines are a pure and clear profile with an intricate and detailed presentation of blackberries, olives, violets, spice and forest floor notes wrapped around a smoke-infused minerality.

The 2016 Saint-Joseph really highlights these signatures. It has a startling clarity and serious, finely detailed length. At this young stage, you get a vivid impression of how well composed and deep it is. It's very easy to imagine it aging beautifully. This shows why we love the 2016 vintage in the northern Rhone so much.

I'll close with a warning. As is usually the case, both of the these Gonon's are very limited. Please give us your ideal order and we'll try our best.
