To cut to the chase, this is a great deal on a 1er Cru from one of Burgundy's historic domaines.
At $49.95 on bottles and $47.95 on 6ers, the value is pretty crazy - the lowest price around by a nice margin.
As the years go by, it's difficult not to look back at the 2008 vintage with some nostalgia. It was a pure, soil-soaked, classic vintage. Just two vintages later, the wines look like values.

Even in the context of value that 08s generally deliver, Gouges' 1er Cru Clos des Porrets stands out boldly as something to stock up on. To put this in perspective, Gouges' Clos des Porrets typically goes for somewhere around $65-$80 these days. Or maybe a better way to put it is that many village wines go for the same amount or more.
Gouges, along with Chevillon, is a legend of Nuits St. Georges. Bottles from the 70s are still gorgeous today.
There are few better deals for your cellar. At under $50 there are not many, if any, other red Burgundies that offer you the opportunity to track its evolution over the next twenty to thirty years, and quite possibly beyond.
This brings us to the key part of Gouges: the wines can be a little hard to read in their youth, but time in the cellar transforms them. Gouges' that came off as being a little rugged in their early days have become studies in clarity and regalness with some time buried away.
Gouges' signature has always been a certain sturdiness married to an ultra-clear expression of their sites. Unsurprisingly, this transparency is particularly true in the 2008 vintage.
Galloni is right to focus on the "balance and energy" in the 08. Gouges' 08 Porrets boasts earth, mineral, dark fruits and a healthy dose of Nuits' wild, sauvage character. It comes off with a directness and vivid detail with enough polish to avoid the rusticity that Nuits can possess.
