Bachelet's Charmes is among the rarest treasures of Burgundy.
Bachelet has a mere 0.44ha in Charmes. The vines are 100-years old. In any given vintage, somewhere around 180 cases are produced.
Simply put, Bachelet's Charmes is one of the greatest wines of Burgundy.
Bachelet's Charmes is larger-than-life. When this wine is in its zone, it has few peers. It's wickedly complex, deeply mysterious and insanely powerful, yet manages to maintain an ultra-clear, super-elegant balance.
The 2018 Charmes is destined to be another jaw-dropping example of the wine. It has such purity and such length that it makes its greatness felt immediately.
It's an unfortunate reality that the availability of Charmes is brutal. Each year, I devote an enormous amount of energy chasing it down. Still, I never end up securing all that much. It's no different in 2018. I don't think it will stick around for very long.

Burghound: "There is just enough wood present to warrant mentioning framing the cool and pure essence of red currant, cassis, plum and a variety of spice wisps. The rich and relatively full-bodied flavors possess outstanding mid-palate density thanks to the abundant dry extract that imparts a highly seductive mouthfeel as well as buffers the firm tannic spine shaping the strikingly long finish where a touch of bitter cherry pit character emerges. This offers excellent aging potential yet it's not so compact that it could not be approached in its youth if that's your preference."
