As we've said before (many times), this is simply one of the greatest values in white wine, period.
This is a bottle we introduced to the U.S. nearly 15 years ago; it is a wine that is bought by the most serious collectors. Yet it is also a perennial staff favorite, a "Grand Cru" Riesling priced to be nearly a summertime go-to wine.
At $25.95 per bottle, you can understand the immense popularity.
The 2021 edition just arrived and it continues the white-hot streak Florian Lauer has enjoyed with this wine. As with the 2020, the 2021 is nervy, tensile, and incisive. Given the rapier-like acids and the truly cool-toned, classic vintage that 2021 is turning out to be, this isn't a great surprise.Â
What differentiates the 2021 "Senior" is the energy, the lift. This is perhaps a bit harder to define or quantify, yet the explosive thrust of the 2021, and the forceful propulsion of this wine is what makes it one of the most satisfying "Seniors" of the last many years. It's right up there with 2008, 2012, and 2017.
This wine is more structured than any Senior we've had since 2008. So, a quick bit of advice for the purist for the 2021 vintage: Don't just buy "Senior," go a bit deeper than you normally would.
Lauer's "Senior" is one of our most popular offerings every year. There's no doubt that this will sell out quickly.
