Great Value Barbaresco
2000 Produttori del Barbaresco
Magical Nebbiolo

"The Produttori del Barbaresco continue to make some of the best-value wines in the zone." Antonio Galloni

If the phrase "traditional Piedmont" brings to mind the contemporary giants of this category (and rightly so) - Giacomo Conterno, Bartolo Mascarello and Giuseppe Mascarello - it's worth noting that the Produttori del Barbaresco essentially defined great Nebbiolo for the first few decades of the 20th Century.

They are one of the oldest producers of Barbaresco; they are also one of the greatest, nearly incomprehensible values, of this region.

Today, we bring this point into rather dramatic focus with a small parcel of single-vineyard Barbaresco with over a decade of age, in prime form and just over $50. A few magnums are included in the stash.

If Nebbiolo can be gritty and awkward out of the gate, this is an opportunity to enjoy beautiful examples of traditional Nebbiolo in a broad drinking window, with all the perfume and the elegance that implies.

Our offering includes two of the finest Crus from Produttori del Barbaresco: the Pora Riserva at just over $50 and some extremely rare magnums of the Montestefano Riserva for just over $130.

The 2000 vintage produced full-bodied Barbaresco with round, supple tannins balanced nicely with deep fruit notes. The Pora Riserva presents a brighter cherry and red currant fruit profile with a seductive bouquet of truffle just emerging. The Montestefano Riserva, on the other hand, has a darker and deeper fruit structure with more meat, animal nuances and a touch more raw power. Both wines evolve with time in a decanter, exhibiting an ever-changing spectrum of aromatics.

This is exactly what we expect from great Nebbiolo. This is the magic of Nebbiolo.

Founded in 1894 as the Cantina Sociali and credited as being the founding winery of Barbaresco, the Cantina Sociali brought together smaller vineyard owners. The idea was to produce their own wines rather than to simply sell their grapes to Barolo. In 1958, with the help of the priests of Nieve, the Cantina Sociali was reformed and renamed Produttori del Barbaresco and has been producing traditional Barbaresco ever since.

Stock is very limited. Please give us your maximum order as we will most likely have to allocate these two 2000 Barbaresco.
