Greatness, Elevated: No Monfortino, Only Francia:
2018 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Cascina Francia

Posted by Ian McFadden

Over the years, we've learned to chase down the Francia in vintages when Monfortino isn't produced.

Francia is always a stunning wine. However, in these years, it reaches a level of nuance and ageability that's truly remarkable.

Francia is one of Piedmont's top wines. It comes from one of Serralunga’s top sites, a commune renowned for the density, texture, and heft of its wines. The 2018 Francia shows the Serralunga at its best.

This is a monumental Barolo. The grandeur and architecture of the wine can border on stupefying at times. The 2018 Francia isn't shy in the power department but also struts the breeding and finesse that Conterno endows the wine with. There's also a lovely nuanced gripping depth to the wine.

Roberto Conterno is one of the world's great winemakers. The 2018 Francia is another reminder that few producers anywhere turn out wines at this level.

Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media: "The 2018 Barolo Francia is powerful, deep and also a touch austere. It shows the edginess of all the 2018s, but also has a feeling of textural creaminess that adds tons of character. Spice, menthol, leather and a whole range of balsamic overtones build into the deep, imposing finish. Roberto Conterno decided to forego his Barolo Monfortino in 2018, opting instead to blend all the casks into his Francia bottling. When that happens, Francia often surprises down the road. That could very well turn out to be the case here."
