I wrote the above quote earlier this year when we were offering the 2001 Freddy Emiles in 750ml.
At the time, we called it probably the best deal of the year. Almost five months later, I don’t think any of that’s changed - this wine is still sensational and it still represents one of the most insane quality-to-price ratios we’ve seen in a long time.

The "Freddy Emile" is one of those best-kept secrets among wine geeks - it is a perennial overachiever, and the 2001 has been one of our favorites for many years - an absolutely superb vintage for the Freddy Emile.
In half-bottle, these are in a glorious drinking window right now, though even in the 375ml format, this bottle has the zip and intensity to power through another couple of years.
Trimbach’s Rieslings are known - are respected, even idolized - for their stature and longevity, and 2001 was a fantastic vintage at the maison. The grapes come from vines over 30 years old, and the house always places a premium on minerality, purity and structure. While the signature Alsace weight is tangible, the wine shows absolutely no sluggishness - it is delineated and focused... a "precise locomotive" of a wine, as we’ve called it.
This is one of the benchmark dry Rieslings, in Alsace or anywhere else. It is an exemplar of the varietal the world over, with a decade of beauty rest on it to bring it into perfect form.
