2010 Drouhin Grands-Echézeaux

"If one is a fan of the elegance, transparency, complexity and sappy beauty of great, old school Burgundy, then the 2010 Joseph Drouhin wines are destined to become some of your most cherished cellar treasures!" -John Gilman

We're huge fans of Drouhin and are constantly astonished by the skill of Veronique Drouhin, but the 2010 Drouhins benefit from a bit of magic.

They represent the ideal meeting of vintage, producer and terroir. The jewel-box fruit, the finesse and clarity of the house's style marries perfectly to the intensity and transparency of the 2010 vintage.

When we tasted at Drouhin in January, the Grands-Echézeaux was clearly one of the stars of the line-up. Drouhin's Grands-Echézeaux has always been a benchmark of this Grand Cru, but recently this bottling has hit new heights.

This hasn't escaped notice. For example, Burghound comes right out and writes, "of all the wines in the extensive Drouhin portfolio, the Grands-Echézeaux seems to have made the most progress in recent years and it now consistently ranks with the very best here."

Burghound goes on to place the 2010 Grands-Echézeaux in the "don't miss" category with a glowing review. John Gilman is also blown away by the wine's quality. For him, it's a "hauntingly beautiful wine."

Of equal importance is that Drouhin's Grands-Echézeaux represents some of the most serious value available from such a top-notch producer.

If you're looking for gorgeous aromatics combined with a concentrated and precise elegance, Drouhin's 2010 Grands-Echézeaux is worth a very close look. It's a beautiful exercise in purity, expressiveness and finesse.

The 2010 vintage is a vintage that's being aggressively hunted down by purists and Burghounds. The combination of pristine clarity and terroir expression make it impossible to not get excited about it and chase it down.

The bad news is that yields are down somewhere around 30-40% - availability is just ugly. We're happy to offer a small parcel of sharply priced Drouhin 2010 Grands-Echézeaux only to those who've supported the Burgundy program. Even with the reduced scope of the offering, this will likely sell out.

John Gilman: "The 2010 Grands Echézeaux from Maison Drouhin is another absolutely classic in the making. The deep, pure, sappy and perfumed nose jumps from the glass in a blendof plums, red and black cherries, duck, woodsmoke, cocoa powder, complex soil tones, violets and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and very vibrant, with striking purity on the attack, a sappy core, a brilliant expression of terroir, suave tannins and magical focus on the endless, pure and seamless finish. Hauntingly beautiful wine."
